Introduction
Clynelish distillery sits on the coastal edge of Sutherland in Scotland's far north, built in 1967 as a modern replacement for the neighbouring distillery now known as the legendary Brora. Clynelish has earned its status among whisky connoisseurs worldwide for one defining trait: its uniquely waxy spirit. This waxiness — often compared to snuffed candles, beeswax, and oilskin jackets — is created through an unusual production quirk involving oils that accumulate in the feints receiver. When the distillery once cleaned these deposits away, the waxy character disappeared, so they now carefully preserve it.
Distilled in 2015. Matured in a refill Oloroso butt, this 9-year-old combines that signature waxiness with dried fruit richness. Bottled by Adelphi in 2024 with an outturn of 477 bottles.
Tasting Notes

Nose: Fresh and fruity, with a strong citrus note. Lemon jelly, candied orange peel, tangerines and blood oranges, but also a touch of beeswax and ripe peaches. Hints of pastry and oregano linger in the background. Over time, the peach aroma becomes more intense and sweeter, reminiscent of iced tea.
Palate: Sweet & sour apples, rhubarb, white chocolate and gooseberries, along with the bitterness of grapefruit and currants, rounded off by a light spiciness.
Finish: Medium to long, fruity, sweet and delicately spicy. Ripe apples, white wine, lemon cake, nutmeg and camphor.
The aromas are diverse and very well balanced. A fine bottling!
