Gifting tips & things to avoid

• Mind the homophones. In Hong Kong, clocks (鐘/終) and umbrellas (傘/散) are traditionally avoided. Whisky, by contrast, carries the sense of "long-lasting" — 長長久久. Play it safe by skipping the number 4 and favouring 8, 18 or 38 years.
• Give in pairs for weddings and housewarmings — a bottle plus two glasses reads far better than a bottle alone.
• Match the palate, not your own. Don't hand a beginner a heavily peated Islay. Start with sherry-cask or fruity Highland styles.
• Presentation counts — a gift box, a handwritten card, or engraving turns a bottle into an occasion.
