But starting a collection without a clear strategy is an easy way to spend a lot of money on bottles you'll never enjoy. Here's how to do it right.

Drinking collector — You buy bottles you intend to open and enjoy, with an eye toward quality and variety.
Investment collector — You buy bottles with the expectation that they'll appreciate in value. This requires market knowledge, patience, and proper storage. Not all whisky appreciates — most doesn't.
Curator collector — You build a collection around a theme: a specific distillery, a region, a decade, an independent bottler, or a style.
Start with a Theme
Good starting themes for Hong Kong collectors include: a single distillery (Springbank, Glenfarclas, Bruichladdich), independent bottlings from a specific bottler or across multiple bottlers, a specific region (Islay, Speyside, Highland, Campbeltown, or Japanese), or a specific era (1980s or 1990s distillations).
Storage: Getting It Right in Hong Kong
Hong Kong's climate — hot, humid, and subject to significant temperature swings — is the enemy of whisky storage. The essentials: aim for 15–20°C stable temperature; 60–70% relative humidity; store away from direct sunlight and UV; store bottles upright (not on their side); avoid vibration from heavy appliances.
For serious collectors, a dedicated wine/spirits cabinet with temperature and humidity control is a worthwhile investment.
Buying Smart
Build a relationship with a specialist retailer who understands the collector market. Use auction platforms for older and rarer expressions — factor in buyer's premiums (typically 20–25%). Sign up for distillery mailing lists for limited releases. Independent bottlings — single cask, finite quantities — are inherently collectible.
